"The best thing we did was the boat across Mahon harbour to Illa del Rei. Fifteen minutes from the waterfront and you're on a beautifull island with sculptures dotted round the gardens. We stayed for dinner at the Cantina under the olive trees and got the boat back as the lights came on round the harbour. It only stays open late in high summer, so check times before you go. Two more tips. Líthica, just outside Ciutadella, is an old stone quarry turned into gardens and mazes (book online, and keep an eye on the kids in the labyrinth). And Favàritx lighthouse on the north coast looks like the surface of the moon, all black slate. No cars in summer, so get the bus from Mahon."

• Car hire - the best way to explore hidden coves and the Cami de Cavalls trailheads. Roads are quiet and well-maintained, and you can drive across the whole island in about 45 minutes. Just watch for narrow lanes in the countryside

• Taxis - available in most resorts and easy to find. Metered and straightforward, though worth pre-booking in high season. Uber doesn't operate in Menorca
