The main Elounda beach. Calm, shallow and gently shelving, so small children can wade out while you watch from a sunbed. There is a playground behind it.
The Spinalonga boat trip. A real fortress on a real island, twenty minutes out of the harbour, with an abandoned village to walk round. Boats run regularly through the day and it is the single best thing to do here with children.
Elounda Residence Resort & Waterpark. Slides and splash pools on site, so a full day happens without leaving the hotel.
A glass-bottomed boat over Olous. The sunken city sits in shallow water just off the causeway, and seeing walls and street lines under the surface lands better with children than any museum.

Spinalonga. The Venetians fortified the island in 1579, the Ottomans held it for centuries afterwards, and it finished its working life in 1957 as one of the last leper colonies in Europe. Boats go from Elounda harbour and the crossing takes about twenty minutes.
Olous. A Greek harbour city that thrived on trade before tectonic shift dropped it beneath the sea. The remains sit just under the surface off the Spinalonga causeway, shallow enough to snorkel.
Dories and Fourni. Mountain villages inland. Dories holds Crete's oldest icon of the Virgin Mary, from the fourteenth century, and Fourni has a cottage-industry museum.
Kazanemata, October to December. The raki-making season, when local distilleries open their stills and the whole thing turns into food, music and a great deal of fresh raki.
What are the best beaches in Elounda?
Elounda's coast is not one long strip. It is a series of small bays and coves around Mirabello, most of them sheltered, several of them attached to a hotel, and one you can only reach by boat. Here is how it breaks down.
Elounda town beach - the main one, and the easiest. Sand and shingle, calm shallow water that shelves very gently, a playground behind it and tavernas within a minute's walk. This is the family beach.
Driros and the causeway beaches - the small stretches either side of the causeway out to the Spinalonga peninsula, where the water is shallow and clear enough to see the outlines of sunken Olous. Bring a mask.
Kolokytha - round the headland, reachable only by boat from Elounda or Plaka. White sand, turquoise water, no facilities and no road. The best beach in the area and the one worth organising a boat for.
Plaka - pebbles rather than sand, up the coast where the fishing village looks straight across the channel at Spinalonga. Quieter, with a handful of excellent fish tavernas right behind it.
The resort beaches - a large share of this shoreline belongs to the hotels, which is exactly why Elounda is as calm as it is. If a private beach matters to you, it is worth choosing the hotel on that basis; several here have two.
A note on the water. Mirabello Bay is sheltered, so the sea is usually flat, and it holds its heat: 25°C to 26°C from June right through September, and still swimmable in October.

Summers are hot and dry, with highs of 28–30°C from June to September and barely a drop of rain. The bay's calm, sheltered waters warm up nicely by late May and stay swimable right through to October.

Less than its reputation, and how much you will spend depends entirely on where you stay. Elounda is Crete's smartest resort and the top end of it is genuinely luxurious, but the town itself prices like the rest of the island.
A taverna meal runs €15 to €30 a head, a cocktail €8 to €12 and a beer €4 to €6. Eat in the harbour square rather than in a resort restaurant and Elounda costs about what Hersonissos does.
Where the money goes is the hotel, and that is a choice rather than a given. The five-star resorts with private pools attached to the room are what Elounda is famous for, and of course if you want to stay there, they are fabulous.
However, if you're on a stricter budget, there are studios and apartments in the same bay, walking distance from the same harbour, at a fraction of the cost.

Spinalonga sits about twenty minutes out of Elounda harbour and boats run through the day in season, so it is a half-day rather than a full excursion. You can also go from Plaka, which is a shorter crossing.

You walk in through the tunnel, round the old village street, and out along the sea walls. It's wonderful to explore but you don't need ages. Allow an hour and a half on the island itself.

Anywhere between May and October works, and they are different holidays rather than better and worse ones.
July and August are the full Elounda: 28°C to 30°C, twelve hours of sunshine, the sea at its warmest, and every resort, boat trip and restaurant running at full tilt. If you have school holidays to work around, this is the guaranteed version.
May, June and September sit at 22°C to 28°C with the sea still warm, and September's water is the warmest of the whole year after a summer of heating up.
April and October are 17°C to 24°C, greener, and the time to come if you want to walk the coast path and see the site at Spinalonga without a hat welded to your head. April's wildflowers across the hills behind the bay are worth the trip on their own.

Olous was an ancient Greek harbour city that sank below the sea after tectonic shifts. You can see structural remains just under the water off the Spinalonga peninsula — a snorkel and a calm day is all you need. There were temples to Artemis and possibly Zeus here. It's one of Elounda's most unique draws.
