Cheap holidays to Antalya

Antalya is already the cheapest way to get five stars in the Mediterranean, so "cheap" here doesn't mean settling for less, it means the same holiday costing what a three-star costs in Spain.

The cheapest months to fly are November through March, when the coast is mild rather than hot, 15 to 18°C and dry enough for walking. That is a different holiday, not a lesser one, and it suits anyone after Kaleici, the ruins and the mountains without the heat. Late April, May and October give you beach weather at the edges of the season. And if you're tied to the school holidays, the way to save in July and August is on the board basis rather than the dates: ultra all-inclusive at a five-star that includes the beach club, the waterpark and the a la cartes usually beats a cheaper half-board room where the extras land on the bill at the end.

Once you're there, the sums are small. A kebab feast is £5-£8 / €6-€9, a beer £1.50-£2.50 / €2-€3, and a coffee about £1 / €1.20. The resort areas furthest from the airport, Alanya in particular, tend to price lower than Belek because the transfer is longer, so a two-hour coach ride is worth the money if you don't mind the coach. And the one genuinely free thing worth doing is the best thing on the coast anyway: walking Kaleici at dusk, down through Hadrian's Gate to the old harbour.

• Olympos Teleferik up Tahtali - A cable car from near sea level to 2,365 metres in about ten minutes, above Kemer. There's often snow at the top while people are swimming at the bottom, which is a peculiar thing to photograph.

• Phaselis - A Roman city with three harbours where the ruins run straight down into the sea, north of Kemer. You can swim off the ancient quay, which is not a sentence you get to write about many places.

• Temple of Apollo at sunset, Side - The most romantic spot on the coast, floodlit Roman columns with the Mediterranean going pink behind them. Get there before the tour coaches.

• Perge - A Roman city twenty minutes from Antalya with a colonnaded main street, a stadium and the bathhouse still legible in the stonework. Far quieter than Aspendos and just as good.

• A proper hammam - Scrubbed, steamed and pummelled until you feel brand new. Every town has traditional hammams alongside the hotel spas, and the traditional ones are better.

• Dim Cay river restaurants, Alanya - Wooden platforms built out over a cold mountain river, low tables, cushions, and grilled trout eaten with your feet almost in the water. Lunch that turns into an afternoon.
