Khao Lak is Thailand's quieter Andaman coast: 30km of beautiful, uncrowded beaches backed by jungle, with the Similan Islands just a speedboat ride offshore and not a high-rise in sight.
Highlights of your Holidays to Khao Lak
The Similan Islands โ A marine national park 60km offshore consistently rated among the top ten dive sites in the world, with white-sand beaches and crystal-clear water. Open mid-October to mid-May only.
Phang Nga Bay โ The iconic stretch of jagged limestone karst islands rising straight out of emerald water, including James Bond Island (Khao Phing Kan) from The Man with the Golden Gun.

๐ Good to Know
โ๏ธ Weather โ Two distinct seasons. The dry season (November to April) brings calm seas and warm sunshine, and is when the Similan Islands are open. The green season (May to October) is the monsoon with heavy afternoon rain and the Similans closed for marine-park rest. Most beach hotels reduce prices significantly during the green season.
๐ถ Money โ The currency is the Thai Baht. Street food meals cost around ยฃ1โยฃ2 / โฌ1.50โโฌ2.50, a sit-down restaurant dinner ยฃ8โยฃ15 / โฌ9โโฌ17, and beachfront cocktails ยฃ3โยฃ5 / โฌ3.50โโฌ6.
๐ Fun Fact โ Khao Lak is the gateway to one of the world's top diving destinations. The Similan Islands and the deeper Surin Islands further north have some of the clearest water in the Andaman Sea, and you can dive the famous wrecks of the Boonsung and Sea Chart from local boats.

๐๏ธ Best Beaches
Khao Lak isn't one beach, it's a 30km string of beaches north of Phuket each with its own character. Here's the lineup south to north:
Sunset Beach (Hat Khao Lak) โ The southernmost mainland beach, actually inside Khao Lak-Lam Ru National Park. Quiet, scenic and the place to watch the sun drop into the Andaman.
Nang Thong Beach โ The central main beach where most of the resort action and Khao Lak town are clustered. The busiest stretch with bars, restaurants, dive shops and the night market, but still feels relaxed by Phuket standards.
Bang Niang Beach โ Just north of Nang Thong, slightly quieter with a long flat stretch perfect for sunset walks. The famous Bang Niang Market (Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays) is the proper local market experience.
Pakarang Cape โ Rocky headland between Khuk Khak and Bang Niang with a calm reef just offshore, good for snorkelling straight from the beach.
Coral Beach (Hat Pakarang) โ The snorkelling-from-the-shore beach, with a fringing reef close to the sand and easy access from Pakarang Cape area resorts.
Khuk Khak Beach โ Properly long and quiet with a few resort clusters and otherwise empty stretches. Some of the best swimming on the coast at low tide when the water clears.
Bang Sak Beach โ The northernmost main beach, casuarina-tree-lined and almost completely undeveloped. This is where you go to feel like you've got the place to yourself.
Thai Muang Beach โ Further south near the airport route, quiet with sea turtle nesting between November and February.
๐ Where to Stay in Khao Lak
The Khao Lak coastline runs roughly south to north, each area has its own feel.
๐จโ๐ฉโ๐ง Families
Nang Thong is the family-first central choice with the biggest cluster of family resorts, walking distance to the town's restaurants and the night market, plus the busiest stretch of swimmable beach. Khuk Khak is the next step quieter, mostly resort-strip with shuttle buses to the town. Bang Niang sits between the two and works for families wanting beach plus easy market access.
๐ Couples
Bang Sak is the quietest family-friendly resort cluster up north, with the boutique hotels and near-empty beaches that suit couples wanting proper escape. Pakarang Cape for boutique and design-led options with the snorkelling reef on the doorstep. Bang Niang for couples who want the quieter end of the action with the Bang Niang Market and night-market street food a short walk away.
๐ฏ Groups
Nang Thong is the obvious group base, the town's bars, restaurants and the main night market are all within walking distance, and the main bus stop and dive shop cluster is here too. Khuk Khak for groups wanting a beach-and-pool focus with bigger resorts that have multiple bars and pools to spread out across.
๐ฃ๏ธ Local Lingo
Thai is the official language. English is widely spoken at hotels, dive shops and tourist restaurants but properly limited at the local markets and small eateries, where a few Thai phrases go a long way:
Sawatdee krap / Sawatdee ka, sah-wah-DEE krap / ka, Hello (krap for male speaker, ka for female speaker)
Khob khun krap / Khob khun ka, kop-KOON krap / ka, Thank you (same krap/ka rule)
Mai phet, my-PET, Not spicy (the most useful phrase for ordering Thai food unless you genuinely love proper Thai-spicy heat)
Chai / Mai chai, CHAI / my-CHAI, Yes / No
Tao rai?, tao-RYE, How much? (essential for markets, tuk-tuks and beach vendors)

๐จโ๐ฉโ๐งโ๐ฆ Families
An ethical elephant sanctuary visit is the headline family activity. Several reputable sanctuaries near Khao Lak let you bathe, feed and walk with rescued elephants without riding (which damages elephants' spines).
A day trip to the Similan Islands (November to mid-May only) is brilliant for older kids: snorkelling at multiple stops with crystal-clear water, with lunch on the boat included.
Khao Sok National Park is properly worth the day trip or an overnight stay in floating bungalows on Cheow Lan Lake, with jungle treks plus night safari options for older kids.
Most family resorts have on-site waterparks or kids' clubs covered, so down days at the resort are easy to fill without leaving.
Take a Thai cooking class as a family. Dozens of cooking schools in Khao Lak run morning or evening half-day classes including a market trip and a full dinner cook-along.
๐ Couples
A private long-tail boat charter for a sunset cruise around Phang Nga Bay's limestone karsts is properly romantic and surprisingly affordable for a private boat.
Book a couples' Thai massage at any of the hundreds of spas along the strip: traditional Thai massage at local-market prices, or resort spa treatments for a more premium experience.
Sunset dinner on the beach at any of the strip's beachfront restaurants. Several do proper romantic setups with tables on the sand and tealights.
A diving or snorkelling day trip together to the Similan Islands or local reefs. Even non-divers can do the snorkel boats and the marine life is exceptional.
An overnight in a floating bungalow on Cheow Lan Lake in Khao Sok: properly remote, properly off-grid, jungle sounds at dawn, one of the most romantic experiences in Thailand.
๐ Groups
Khao Lak's bar scene is concentrated around Nang Thong, with a strip of relaxed beach bars, sports bars and a few late-night spots. Properly chilled compared to Phuket's Patong but enough for a good group night.
Book a group dive trip to the Similan Islands as a multi-day liveaboard, or a single-day boat trip if the group has mixed dive and non-dive interest.
Hire scooters or quad bikes to explore the inland jungle. Several local operators run group tours into the rubber plantations and waterfalls.
An ethical elephant sanctuary day visit works as a brilliant group activity. Most sanctuaries take groups of eight to twelve and the shared experience is properly memorable.
Group Thai cooking class followed by dinner of what you've cooked. The kitchens hold groups of up to fifteen and it's a properly fun way to do a group meal.

Khao Lak's weather splits cleanly into two. November to April is dry, sunny and warm at 26โ29ยฐC, with calm seas and the best visibility for snorkelling and diving. This is when the Similan Islands are open and when most visitors come. May to October is the monsoon: still warm, but with heavy afternoon downpours, rougher seas and the lowest prices. The beaches stay beautiful in both seasons, but the water activities and island trips are a dry-season thing.

What's the story with the tsunami memorials?
What's the story with the tsunami memorials?
Khao Lak was one of the areas hardest hit by the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. The Ban Nam Khem Tsunami Memorial Park (free, open daily) remembers the victims with a quiet, respectful space for reflection, including a Buddha shrine and a beachfront for contemplation. The International Tsunami Museum in Bang Niang tells the wider story. Both are worth visiting, and both are handled with sensitivity and dignity.
Is Khao Lak good for families?
Is Khao Lak good for families?
One of the best choices in Thailand. The beaches are wide, shallow and uncrowded, the resorts have proper kids' clubs and waterparks, and the whole area is quiet and safe by design. The Similan Islands, jungle trails and elephant sanctuaries give you day-trip options that work for all ages without the sensory overload of Phuket or Pattaya.
What is the food like in Khao Lak?
What is the food like in Khao Lak?
Brilliant, and cheap. Khao Lak grew up as fishing villages, so the seafood is as fresh as anywhere on the Andaman coast. Thai street-food classics like pad thai, moo ping (sweet grilled pork skewers), som tam (papaya salad) and tom yum goong (hot and sour prawn soup) are everywhere, and the beachfront restaurants along Nang Thong do excellent grilled whole fish and prawns. The Bang Niang Night Market (Monday, Wednesday, Saturday) is the single best grazing spot: arrive hungry and eat everything.
What events are there in Khao Lak?
What events are there in Khao Lak?
Khao Lak is quieter on the events calendar than Phuket or Pattaya. The main one is the annual tsunami memorial ceremony in late December, held at Ban Nam Khem and attended by locals and visitors. Loy Krathong (November) is celebrated on the beaches with candlelit floating baskets. Songkran (Thai New Year, April) brings water fights and celebrations across the area. The Bang Niang Night Market (Monday, Wednesday, Saturday) is the closest thing to a regular event.
Tell me about the nightlife in Khao Lak?
Tell me about the nightlife in Khao Lak?
Honest answer: this isn't where you come for nightlife, and that's the point. Khao Lak's evenings are about beachfront dinners, hotel bars, the occasional live-music spot in Nang Thong, and the night market. If you want clubs and big nights out, Phuket is 90 minutes south. Khao Lak's whole appeal is that it doesn't try to be that.
