🏖️ Best Beaches

Khao Lak isn't one beach, it's a 30km string of beaches north of Phuket each with its own character. Here's the lineup south to north:

• Sunset Beach (Hat Khao Lak) – The southernmost mainland beach, actually inside Khao Lak-Lam Ru National Park. Quiet, scenic and the place to watch the sun drop into the Andaman.

• Nang Thong Beach – The central main beach where most of the resort action and Khao Lak town are clustered. The busiest stretch with bars, restaurants, dive shops and the night market, but still feels relaxed by Phuket standards.

• Bang Niang Beach – Just north of Nang Thong, slightly quieter with a long flat stretch perfect for sunset walks. The famous Bang Niang Market (Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays) is the proper local market experience.

• Pakarang Cape – Rocky headland between Khuk Khak and Bang Niang with a calm reef just offshore, good for snorkelling straight from the beach.

• Coral Beach (Hat Pakarang) – The snorkelling-from-the-shore beach, with a fringing reef close to the sand and easy access from Pakarang Cape area resorts.

• Khuk Khak Beach – Properly long and quiet with a few resort clusters and otherwise empty stretches. Some of the best swimming on the coast at low tide when the water clears.

• Bang Sak Beach – The northernmost main beach, casuarina-tree-lined and almost completely undeveloped. This is where you go to feel like you've got the place to yourself.

• Thai Muang Beach – Further south near the airport route, quiet with sea turtle nesting between November and February.

The Khao Lak coastline runs roughly south to north, each area has its own feel.

Nang Thong is the family-first central choice with the biggest cluster of family resorts, walking distance to the town's restaurants and the night market, plus the busiest stretch of swimmable beach. Khuk Khak is the next step quieter, mostly resort-strip with shuttle buses to the town. Bang Niang sits between the two and works for families wanting beach plus easy market access.

💕 Couples

Bang Sak is the quietest family-friendly resort cluster up north, with the boutique hotels and near-empty beaches that suit couples wanting proper escape. Pakarang Cape for boutique and design-led options with the snorkelling reef on the doorstep. Bang Niang for couples who want the quieter end of the action with the Bang Niang Market and night-market street food a short walk away.

👯 Groups

Nang Thong is the obvious group base, the town's bars, restaurants and the main night market are all within walking distance, and the main bus stop and dive shop cluster is here too. Thai is the official language. English is widely spoken at hotels, dive shops and tourist restaurants but properly limited at the local markets and small eateries, where a few Thai phrases go a long way:

• Khao Lak's bar scene is concentrated around Nang Thong, with a strip of relaxed beach bars, sports bars and a few late-night spots. Properly chilled compared to Phuket's Patong but enough for a good group night.

• Book a group dive trip to the Similan Islands as a multi-day liveaboard, or a single-day boat trip if the group has mixed dive and non-dive interest.

• Hire scooters or quad bikes to explore the inland jungle. Several local operators run group tours into the rubber plantations and waterfalls.
