Sport is at the heart of Quinta do Lago, and the facilities here are a serious cut above most resort destinations. The estate is home to three championship 18-hole golf courses — South (eight-time host of the Portuguese Open), North (redesigned by Paul McGinley in 2014) and Laranjal (set in a former orange grove). The Campus is a world-class sports and fitness centre offering tennis, padel, cycling, swimming, personal training and coaching for all ages and abilities. The Ria Formosa Natural Park, right on the doorstep, is brilliant for cycling along the boardwalk trails, birdwatching (300+ species including flamingos) and guided nature walks. The beach has watersports including jet skis, kayaks, banana boats and SUP.
The setting is what makes Quinta do Lago feel truly special. The estate sits between pine forests, freshwater lakes and the Ria Formosa lagoon — a landscape that feels a world away from the built-up stretches of the central Algarve. The golf courses wind through umbrella pines with views over the natural park, the cycling trails follow boardwalks over the marshes, and the beach is backed by undeveloped dunes rather than apartment blocks. The 300m wooden bridge that takes you from the estate to the beach crosses the lagoon and is one of the most photographed spots in the Algarve, especially at sunset when the light on the water is genuinely stunning.
