Lagos is one of the most active resorts in the Algarve. The coastline is brilliant for watersports, with windsurfing, kayaking, sailing and diving all available at Meia Praia and along the cliffs to the south. There are surf schools at nearby Praia da Luz and further west towards Sagres if you fancy trying the Atlantic waves. Back on land, the clifftop walks around Ponta da Piedade are free and spectacular, and there are several golf courses within a 20-minute drive. The Old Town has plenty of independent boutiques and craft shops if you prefer your activity a bit more retail-focused, and there's a monthly market in the centre that's worth timing your visit around.
Lagos is surrounded by some of the most dramatic beaches in the Algarve. Praia Dona Ana is the star, a small cove of golden sand framed by sandstone cliffs and sea stacks, about a 20-minute walk south of the centre. Praia do Camilo, just along the clifftop, is accessed by a steep wooden staircase and feels wonderfully secluded. For something bigger, Meia Praia stretches for 4km east of the harbour and is brilliant for watersports, long walks, and families. Praia da Batata is the closest to the centre, right next to the Old Town walls and the Forte da Bandeira. For a day trip, head inland to the Barragem de Bravura, a reservoir surrounded by hills with walking trails and beautiful views over the countryside.
