Alvor's got plenty going on beyond the beach. The coastline is great for kayaking and paddleboarding, with trips running from the harbour and beach throughout the summer. The Ria de Alvor estuary is a protected nature reserve and a brilliant spot for birdwatching, walking, and cycling along the flat boardwalk trails. For something with a bit more adrenaline, watersports operators at Praia de Alvor offer jet skiing, banana boats and parasailing. Golf fans have several courses within a 15-minute drive, including the Penina Championship course and Alto Golf. And if you want to explore the dramatic clifftop scenery between Alvor and Praia da Rocha, the Quinta da Rocha nature reserve trail is a free, family-friendly walk with spectacular coastal views.
Praia de Alvor (also known as Praia dos Tres Irmaos) is the main draw and it's a proper stunner. Stretching for about four miles west of the village, it's a long sweep of golden sand broken up by rock formations, natural arches, and hidden caves that feel like your own private beach. The western end near Tres Irmaos is more dramatic and sheltered, while the eastern end closer to the estuary has shallower, calmer waters that are brilliant for families with young children. The beach has Blue Flag status, lifeguards in summer, and sunbed hire available. For a change of scenery, Praia da Rocha is just a short drive east towards Portimao and is one of the Algarve's biggest and most popular beaches.
