Hamburg's centre does culture by day and the Reeperbahn by night (sleep is optional).
This page is for hotels in the centre of Hamburg. For all the sights, the Travel Guide and the full city information including events and food, head to our main Hamburg holidays page.
Hamburg city centre is perfect for you if...
You want to step out of your hotel and be by the water, whether that's the Alster lakes or the harbour.
You'd rather walk between the sights than work out the U-Bahn.
You like your city break with a proper night out attached.
You don't mind an early Sunday start if there's a fish roll at the end of it.
You like a city that looks as good from a boat as it does on foot.
Where to stay in Hamburg city centre
Hamburg's centre runs from the Alster lakes down to the harbour on the Elbe, and almost everything you'll want to see sits between the two. These are the three patches we'd pick from. For the sights, the Travel Guide and the food, head to our Hamburg holidays page.
Where should you stay near the Alster?
The Alster lakes sit at the top of the centre, with Jungfernstieg's shops and cafés on the Inner Alster and the main station a short walk away.
Fairmont Hotel Vier Jahreszeiten. Hamburg's grand old address, right on the Inner Alster, with its own spa and nine restaurants and bars.
Grand Elysee Hotel. The Elyseum spa has a pool and three sun terraces, and the Top Seven bar is up on the roof.
Scandic Hamburg Emporio. Next to the Planten un Blomen park, with family rooms, a sauna and a courtyard terrace at the bar.
Reichshof Hamburg. A grand hotel since 1910, beside the Deutsches Schauspielhaus theatre near the main station, with a spa and Bar 1910.
Where should you stay near HafenCity and the Speicherstadt?
HafenCity is the new harbour quarter around the Elbphilharmonie, and the Speicherstadt next door is the old red-brick warehouse district, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
25hours Hotel Hamburg HafenCity. Quirky themed rooms (bunk beds included) in the middle of HafenCity, and a sauna right at the top of the hotel.
Holiday Inn Hamburg - HafenCity. An easy family base in HafenCity, where kids eat free and there's a gym on the top floor.
Fraser Suites Hamburg. Serviced suites with kitchenettes in a grand heritage building in the old town, with a sauna and the Quintessenz restaurant.
Where should you stay for St Pauli and the Reeperbahn?
St Pauli runs from the harbour piers up to the Reeperbahn, Hamburg's famous nightlife strip, with the bars of the Schanzenviertel just to the north.
NH Collection Hamburg City. Opposite the Heiligengeistfeld, where the Hamburger Dom funfair sets up, with a sauna and a panoramic sun terrace.
Citadines Michel Hamburg. Apartments with full kitchens, a few minutes' walk from St Michael's Church, so you can eat in when you fancy it.
Movenpick Hotel Hamburg. Built inside an old water tower in Sternschanzenpark, with a bar in the original vaults and the Schanzenviertel on the doorstep.
Arcotel Onyx Hamburg. At the very start of the Reeperbahn, across the road from St Pauli U-Bahn, so the walk home is a short one.
