Unleash your anger (sort of)
Kids will be giddy with all the activities to choose from at the Angry Birds Activity Park. It’s the only place we can think of where you can hop through a laser maze before a round of crazy golf, all with your face painted like a butterfly! What more could you ask for?
Run a tight ship
Can’t decide between speedboat rides, snorkelling, jet-skis, and parasailing? You should take a cruise with Afrikat! They take you out on the water where you can enjoy lunch and a swim or take part in every watersport imaginable, so the whole family’s happy.
River deep, mountain high
If you want to get to higher ground, one of the best ways to see the dramatic mountains and valleys is by buggy or Jeep tour. As well as the thrill of the ride there, you’ll get to take some ‘gram-worthy photos of the island’s landscape.
Splash some cash
For a sophisticated day of shopping, head to the designer shops and fancy eateries of The Market shopping centre. On the weekends they have a free music and fountain show, and this alone is worth a visit on cheaper holidays to Puerto Rico.
What events can I go to in Puerto Rico?
While the resort keeps the party going all year round, you’ll need to venture along the coast to enjoy the island’s biggest fiestas and sporting fixtures. Here are some annual highlights to help you plan your holiday to Puerto Rico:
Dia de los Reyes Magos (January) - the festive season ends with a huge parade, where the three wise men throw sweets to crowds of kids.
Carnival (February/March) - a whole month of spectacular partying around the island, with Maspalomas being the closest carnival hub.
Challenge Mogán Gran Canaria (April) - a challenging triathlon that invites visitors to take in the local beauty while battling it out.
Día de Canarias (May) - lively events across the islands showcase local traditions including wrestling, music, and dance.
Maspalomas Pride (May) - the island’s biggest celebration of the LGBTQ+ community, with 10 days of colourful events.
Gran Canaria PWA World Cup (July) - world-class windsurfers head to the island’s East Coast to compete on the waves.
Fiesta del Charco (September) - a unique event in the town of La Aldea de San Nicolas, where everyone runs into a lagoon to try and catch the most fish. Whoever wins is crowned king for the day!
Gran Canara Bike Week (October) - join keen cyclists from around the world to take a ride around the island’s best sights.
Arguineguin Swim (December) - watch safely from the sands as the swimmers race through cool water across the bay.
Where's the best nightlife in Puerto Rico?
Evenings on your holidays to Puerto Rico will be just as fun as the days, since the hotels put on all kinds of nightly shows. The big clubs and buzzing LGBTQ+ scene of Playa del Inglés are just a short taxi ride away, too. You’ll find fun bars throughout the resort, but the hot spots are the shopping centres where there are a few clubs. Check these out:
Lillebror's Party & Pianobar - a live pianist plays all the best hits while getting the audience involved at this fun late-night bar.
Piccadilly Music Pub - nightly shows to get everyone stuck in, and whether it’s a drinking game or a sing-song, it’s always a good laugh.
Terraza Atlantis Food & Cocktail Lounge - a beachside bar with great cocktails and live Spanish music, making it popular with locals.
Riders Dancing - one of the shopping centre nightclubs where you can party hard and enjoy the staff’s dance moves.
Sun Spot Bar - a buzzing hillside bar where the drinks are really cheap, and the mood is cheerful.
Food & Drink
The whole island’s cuisine is totally Spanish at heart, but you’ll taste some African and Latin American twists too. Look out for these dishes at the tapas bar, but remember it’s called ‘enyesques’ in Gran Canaria!
Mojo - a vibrant sauce made with red or green peppers and flavoured with garlic and spices
Papas arrugadas - a Canarian specialty of potatoes boiled in saltwater to create the signature wrinkled look
Vieja sancochada - a citrussy sea bream casserole, often served with mojo and potatoes
Caldo de pescado - fish soup which tends to be less hearty than ours, so it can be enjoyed even in the summer heat
Bienmesabe - a smooth dessert flavoured with almonds and lemon, with a texture like syllabub
Due to the high volume of Brits in the area, you’ll find comfort food on every corner. When we’re not getting a taste of home these are our favourite Spanish spots:
Grill Costa Mar - a seafood-lover's dream, serving some of the best paella.
Blue Beach - home-cooked tapas and cocktails on the beach, what’s not to love?
La Taberna Timanfaya - our pick for a special night out, set in a cave and serving high-class Spanish fare.
Restaurante Toro Bravo - a friendly seaside steakhouse which is a family favourite, thanks to the generous portions and fun service.
Helamore - if you’re craving something cold by the beach, head here for the creamiest gelato and sorbets, with tons of vegan options too.
