Playa de Jandía
The End of the World (In the Best Possible Way)
Playa de Jandía and the entire Jandía Peninsula are at the end of the wild, dramatic, absolutely stunning southern tip of Fuerteventura. If you're after beaches that'll make your friends back home seriously question their life choices, dramatic scenery that looks like it belongs in a Hollywood movie, and that amazing "edge of the world" feeling, then Jandía is calling your name!
The peninsula stretches for miles with different areas offering completely different vibes - from the more developed resort areas around Morro Jable to the wild, windswept beaches of Cofete that feel like they're on a different planet. This is where you come when you want your beach holiday to come with a serious dose of adventure, incredible photo opportunities, and the kind of dramatic scenery that makes every sunset look like it's been directed by someone with excellent taste in lighting!
Beaches That Belong in National Geographic
Let's start with the showstopper - Cofete Beach. This 12-kilometre stretch of pristine white sand backed by dramatic mountains is genuinely one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. It's wild, unspoiled, and so spectacular that you'll spend half your time there just taking photos. The beach also faces west, which means the sunsets are absolutely mind-blowing, so it's a great choice if you're not a morning beach person.
The main resort beaches around Morro Jable are more civilised but equally stunning. It's perfect for families, couples, or anyone who wants spectacular beaches without having to trek across volcanic landscapes to reach them (though honestly, the trek to Cofete is absolutely worth it!)
Playa de Butihondo is another gem - a gorgeous curved bay with calm water that's perfect for swimming and snorkelling. The underwater life here is brilliant, and the water's so clear you can see everything without even putting your head under. Plus, it's slightly less crowded than the main resort beaches, so it's perfect when you want a bit more space to spread out.
Adventures for the Properly Adventurous
The Jandía Peninsula is basically an adventure playground for anyone who likes their holidays with a bit more excitement. The hiking here is absolutely incredible. The Pico de la Zarza is the highest point on Fuerteventura, and the hike to the summit offers 360-degree views that include both the Atlantic and the beaches of the peninsula stretching out below you. It's challenging but manageable for anyone with reasonable fitness, and the sense of achievement when you reach the top (plus the photo opportunities) makes it absolutely worth the effort.
For water sports enthusiasts, this is paradise! The wind conditions are perfect for kitesurfing and windsurfing, with different areas of the peninsula offering conditions suitable for everyone from complete beginners to advanced riders. The waves at some of the more exposed beaches are excellent for surfing, and the underwater landscapes make for incredible diving and snorkelling.
Morro Jable: Civilization at the Edge of Paradise
Morro Jable is the main town on the peninsula. The town has a lovely harbour area with excellent seafood restaurants, a good selection of bars and shops, and that authentic fishing village vibe.
The promenade along the beach is perfect for evening strolls, with palm trees, outdoor restaurants, and those essential beach bars where you can grab a drink while watching the sunset. The town's compact enough that you can walk everywhere easily, but large enough that you won't get bored if you're staying for a week or more.
Some standout restaurants include La Laja for incredible seafood with harbour views (their grilled octopus is legendary), and Restaurante Cofradia de Pescadores, where the local fishermen actually eat - always a good sign!
Wildlife and Natural Wonders
One of the most exciting things about the Jandía Peninsula is the wildlife - this is one of the best places in the Canary Islands for dolphin and whale watching. The deep waters just off the coast are home to pilot whales, dolphins, and occasionally even orcas. The boat trips from Morro Jable are excellent, and seeing these incredible creatures in their natural habitat is genuinely magical.
The peninsula is also home to some unique bird species and has been designated as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, which basically means it's globally recognized as being incredibly special (and worth protecting). The contrast between the desert-like interior and the pristine coastal areas creates unique ecosystems that support some fascinating wildlife.
If you're into photography, the combination of dramatic landscapes, incredible beaches, spectacular sunsets, and interesting wildlife makes Jandía an absolute paradise. Every corner offers another stunning photo opportunity, and the light here - especially during golden hour - is absolutely incredible!
