Skala is the sunny, slow-paced side of Kefalonia - three kilometres of Blue Flag sand backed by pine forests. The village itself has Roman mosaics, and a properly relaxed family-resort rhythm. It's one of Kefalonia's smaller resorts, but perfect if you want to come back from your holiday feeling fully relaxed.

✨ Highlights of your Holidays to Skala

  • 🏖️ Three-kilometre Blue Flag beach: the headline pull, a long stretch of golden sand and shingle backed by pine forests, organised at the resort end and properly wild at the south end.

  • 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Pitch-perfect family base: shallow safe water, beach activities, kid-friendly tavernas

  • 🏛️ Roman villa with intact mosaics: the 2nd-century AD mosaic floors at the edge of the village are some of the best-preserved in the Ionian and free to visit.

  • 🌅 Easy reach to the island's headliners: Myrtos Beach, Melissani Cave and Assos all sit within an hour's drive, so day trips from Skala are properly do-able.

💡 Good to Know

  • ☀️ Weather: classic Ionian, hot dry summers (high 20s to low 30s in July and August), warm shoulder seasons (low-to-mid 20s in May, June, September, October) and mild winters when most of the resort closes.

  • 💶 Money: Greece is on the Euro (€), but expect a beer to cost arounnd £4, and a sit-down taverna dinner with wine for £18 - £30 a head.

  • 🐢 Fun fact: Mounda Beach (a 10-minute drive south of the resort) is one of the most important loggerhead turtle nesting sites in the Mediterranean.

Best time to go on your Skala holidays

Skala enjoys a long, sun-drenched season, and each part of the year brings its own version of that slow, sandy, Ionian-island magic. Whether you’re here for warm swims, quiet walks or proper heatwave holidays, there’s a perfect time to visit depending on your vibe.

  • Spring (Apr–Jun) – a gorgeous time to be in Skala. Days warm up into the low–mid 20s, the sea starts to brighten, and the whole coastline feels peaceful and fresh. It’s the ideal season for coastal drives, exploring the village, and enjoying early beach days without the summer crowds.

  • Summer (Jul–Aug) – peak Kefalonia mode. Expect hot, sunny days in the high 20s to low 30s, crystal-clear water, long beach afternoons and warm, lively evenings in the tavernas. Perfect for families, sun-chasers and anyone who wants the full “wake up, swim, repeat” holiday.

  • Autumn (Sep–Oct) – many people say this is Skala at its best. The weather stays summery, the sea is still beautifully warm, and the pace slows just enough to feel wonderfully relaxed. Great for couples, foodies and beach lovers who want sunshine without peak-season buzz.

  • Winter (Nov–Mar) – quiet, mild and scenic. While most hotels and tourist venues close for the season, Skala’s coastal walks and village charm remain - but it’s not a traditional beach-holiday period.

🏖️ Best Beaches

Skala's coastline is the headline reason to be here, with one long Blue Flag beach as the centrepiece and a couple of quieter alternatives in walking or short-drive range.

🏖️ Skala Beach, the main event, a three-kilometre Blue Flag stretch of golden sand and shingle backed by pine forests. Organised sun-loungers and beach bars at the village end, properly wild and uncrowded the further south you walk.

🐢 Mounda Beach, ten minutes south of the resort, one of the Mediterranean's most important loggerhead turtle nesting sites. Long, wild, mostly empty, with conservation roping during nesting season (May to October). The pick for quiet days and turtle-spotting at dawn.

🌊 Kaminia Beach, about 2.5km from Skala, a sandy stretch popular with locals and visitors. Quieter than Skala Beach itself, good for families wanting a slightly more local feel.

🌲 Katelios Beach, ten minutes south through the pine forests, a long pebble-and-sand cove with shallow water and a handful of waterfront tavernas. Sleepier than Skala, brilliant for a relaxed afternoon away from the resort buzz.

🗣️ Local Lingo

Greek is the official language but English is widely spoken across Skala, every hotel, taverna and bar runs comfortably in English. That said, locals warm to a few words. A handful to get you started:

Yassas, YAH-sas (Γειά σας), Hello / Goodbye

Efharisto, ef-hah-ree-STOH (Ευχαριστώ), Thank you

Parakalo, pah-rah-kah-LOH (Παρακαλώ), Please / You're welcome

Yamas, YA-mas (Γειά μας), Cheers

Kalispera, kah-lee-SPEH-rah (Καλησπέρα), Good evening

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Things to Do in Skala for Families

Skala is built around the family holiday, the beach is shallow, the village is walkable, and the activities are calibrated for kids without writing off the parents.

  • 🏖️ Beach day at Skala Beach: sun loungers and beach bars at the village end, water sports for older kids (jet skis, banana boats, parasailing), shallow water for younger ones. Pack for a full day.

  • 🐢 Turtle-spotting at Mounda Beach: a 10-minute drive south, dawn or early morning is the time to catch the conservation team checking nests, and you might see hatchlings making for the sea between July and September.

  • 🏛️ Roman Villa visit: the 2nd-century AD mosaic floors at the edge of the village are a free, interesting half-hour for older kids. Pair with an ice cream walk through the village.

  • 🚗 Day trip to Melissani Cave: about an hour north near Sami, a magical underground lake where rowing boats glide through electric-blue water. Kids will be wide-eyed.

  • 🌲 Pine forest walks: the trails behind the resort offer shaded routes for cooler-of-day exploring, properly useful when the midday sun gets too much.

💕 Things to Do in Skala for Couples

  • 🌅 Sundowners on the south end of Skala Beach: walk 10 minutes past the loungers and you've got the wild stretch to yourselves at golden hour. Bring a bottle.

  • 🍷 Dinner at a Robola wine taverna: the local dry white from Mount Ainos's slopes is properly drinkable, and the seafront tavernas in the village do it well.

  • 🌊 Day trip to Myrtos Beach: an hour north, the most photographed beach in Greece, blinding-white pebbles and electric-blue water. The viewpoint above is as good as the beach itself.

  • 🚶 Skala to Katelios coastal walk: an hour through olive groves and pine forests, ending at the sleepier sister village for lunch with sea views.

  • 🎶 Live music at a beach bar: several of the resort's bars run live music nights through summer, check what's on locally for a casual evening out.

🎉 Things to Do in Skala for Groups

Skala isn't group holiday territory in the wild-night-out sense, there's no big-club strip, but it's a brilliant slow-paced base if your group is into beach days, watersports and long lunches.

  • Boat hire from the harbour: half-day skippered charters explore the southern coast and uninhabited islands offshore. Bluetooth speaker essential.

  • ⛱️ Watersports session: jet skis, banana boats, parasailing and windsurfing all bookable directly from Skala Beach. Brilliant group bonding without the hangover.

  • 🍴 Long lunch at a beachfront taverna: the resort's seafront strip handles big tables happily, with mixed grill platters and Robola by the carafe being the pick.

  • 🚙 Drive day to Assos and Myrtos: the postcard-perfect fishing village and the island's signature beach an hour and a half north. Combine with a stop at Robola wine country on the way back.

  • 🌃 Cocktail bars on the village strip: the resort core has half a dozen good cocktail spots that fill up after dinner. No clubs, but plenty of music until late.

FAQs

Is Skala good for families?

Very much so. The 3km Blue Flag beach has shallow water, organised sun loungers, water sports for older kids and beach bars within easy reach. The village core is walkable, the hotel stock skews family-friendly with multiple kids' clubs and pools, and the Roman villa, turtle-nesting beach and Melissani Cave day trip give you genuinely interesting half-days when the beach loses its appeal.

When's the best time to visit Skala?

July and August are peak season for good reason, the warmest sea, longest days, fullest atmosphere with the beach bars and watersports operators in full swing. May, June, September and October bring quieter alternatives for date-flexible travellers, with low-to-mid-20s warmth and easier hotel availability. The resort largely shuts down from November to March, so winter trips aren't really an option.

Is Skala lively at night?

Skala has a proper resort-strip nightlife scene without crossing into wild-clubbing territory. Beach bars, cocktail bars, live music venues and tavernas with terraces fill up after dinner and run till midnight or one. Family-friendly during the early evening, livelier after 10pm. If you want full-on clubs, head to Argostoli instead, Skala's pitch is "lively but not chaotic".
