Lourdas gets long, hot summers with highs around 30°C from June through September. The south-facing bay catches the full force of the sun, and Mount Aenos behind the village provides shelter from the north wind. Spring and autumn are gorgeous for walking, sitting in the low to mid-20s with warm, swimmable seas well into October. Winter is mild (12–15°C) and green, but most tourist infrastructure closes from November to April.

FAQs

Is Lourdas good for families?

Lourdas works well for families who want self-catering independence and a quiet, safe village rather than a big resort setup. The beach has shallow water at the edges, and the tavernas are welcoming to children. For families who want kids' clubs, pools, and all-inclusive packages, Skala or Lassi have more of that infrastructure.

When is best to visit Lourdas?

  • Summer (June to September) is peak season: hot, dry, and the beach at its best. The hillside tavernas are all open and the evening light over the bay is consistently gorgeous.

  • Spring (April to June) is the best time for walking, with wildflowers everywhere and the countryside at its greenest.

  • Autumn (September to October) keeps the sea warm and the pace even slower, with fewer visitors and golden light.

What is the food like in Lourdas?

The food is proper Greek home-cooking, served in family-run tavernas with views that bigger restaurants charge a premium for. Look out for Kefalonian meat pie (kreatopita), stuffed vine leaves, goat kirimikato (a spicy tomato stew), grilled octopus, and the local Robola white wine. Lorraine's Magic Hill is the standout: a family-run institution on the hillside above the beach with panoramic views across to Zakynthos, a Chicken Robola that keeps people coming back, and a welcome so warm that regulars get remembered by name.

Is there nightlife in Lourdas?

No, and that's the point. Evenings are taverna dinners on the hillside, a drink at a village bar, and the sound of the crickets. For livelier options, Argostoli is twenty minutes by car, with cocktail bars on the harbour and the best restaurant scene on the island.

Is there a tourist tax in Kefalonia?

Greece charges a nightly accommodation tax that varies by hotel star rating and time of year. During peak season (April to October), rates range from around one euro fifty per night for a two-star property up to ten euros per night for a five-star. The tax is usually collected at the hotel and is not included in the booking price.
