Good to Know
☀️ Weather: Kefalonia runs hot and dry from June through September, with temperatures between 28 and 32°C and near-constant sunshine. The sea reaches 24 to 26°C at peak summer and stays swimmable into October. Late May and September are the sweet spots for warmth without the midsummer crowds.
💶 Money: Agia Efimia is excellent value by any Greek standard. A harbourside taverna dinner for two with wine comes in at around £25 to £40, a cold beer on the waterfront is £2 to £3, and most of the best beaches are free. Boat hire is the one splurge worth every euro.
🎉 Fun fact: The underwater visibility off Agia Efimia reaches up to 50 metres in the right conditions, some of the clearest water in the Mediterranean. Divers have found ancient amphoras and octopuses nestled inside them on the seabed. History is literally on the ocean floor here.
Best beaches in Agia Efimia
The beaches around Agia Efimia are mostly small pebble coves rather than grand sandy bays, and the ones worth remembering most are the ones you reach by boat. That's not a drawback. It's the whole point.
Agia Efimia village beach – a narrow pebble beach right in the village, ideal for a quick morning swim before breakfast or a cool-down dip in the afternoon. Not a full-day beach destination, but clean, calm and conveniently on your doorstep.
Roboli Bay – around ten minutes north of the village by boat, this secluded pebble bay is ideal for snorkelling and swimming, with calm waters and beautiful views across to Ithaca. A brilliant first stop on a day's boat hire.
Elies Beach and Grouta Beach – quiet, uncommercialised coves within reach of the village, both offering the kind of clear, calm swimming water that makes you understand why people keep coming back to this part of Kefalonia.
Antisamos Beach – around 20 minutes south by road near Sami, this is one of Kefalonia's most photographed beaches, with brilliant turquoise water and white pebbles backed by steep green hills. Used as a filming location for Captain Corelli's Mandolin.
Myrtos Beach – the big one. Around a 20 to 25-minute drive west, Myrtos is routinely ranked among the most beautiful beaches in Europe, with sheer white cliffs, impossibly turquoise water and a drama to the setting that photos don't quite capture. Go early, bring your own food and water, and prepare to be completely floored.
Secret northern coves – the coastline between Agia Efimia and Fiskardo is peppered with tiny bays and coves accessible only by boat, each one offering a different shade of blue and the very real possibility of having it entirely to yourself. Dolphins and monk seals have been spotted along this stretch. Hire a boat, get a cooler box and make a day of it.
Where to stay on your Agia Efimia holidays
Agia Efimia is the right choice for couples and independent travellers who want genuine Greek village life rather than a resort. It's a popular stop for sailing flotillas, which tells you everything about the kind of crowd it attracts: people who are there for the sea, the food and the unhurried pace.
💑 For couples: The harbour end of the village, with views out across the bay to Ithaca and candlelit taverna tables right on the water. Agia Efimia is genuinely one of the most romantic spots on the island.
👨👩👧👦 For families: It works well for families who want calm swimming, boat adventures and easy access to the island's big-ticket attractions. The village is flat and easy to navigate, and the boat hire options are suitable for complete beginners.
🎉 For groups: A group after nightlife should look elsewhere. A group after an exceptional boat day, great seafood and proper Greek village atmosphere will be very happy here.
Kefalonia Bay Palace sits right at the heart of it, a four-star property with stunning bay views from the rooms, two outdoor pools and staff that guests consistently go out of their way to praise. It gives you proper facilities without ever feeling like you've landed in a package resort, which is exactly the right balance for a village like this. A natural fit for couples and anyone who wants comfort alongside the authentic Agia Efimia experience.
👨👩👧👦 Things to do for families
Agia Efimia might be small, but it's brilliantly positioned for families who want exploration and adventure rather than a waterpark-and-sunlounger holiday.
Boat hire from the harbour – Yellow Boats and Boulevard Boat Hire both operate from the port and are well-established, highly rated and suitable for complete beginners. No licence needed for the smaller boats. A full day out costs around £60 to £100 for the boat, and the staff give proper tuition before you set off. Book in advance, especially in July and August, it's extremely popular.
Melissani Lake Cave – around 15 minutes south near Sami, this underground lake inside a partially collapsed cave is one of the most extraordinary natural sights in Greece. Boat tours run inside the cave, where the sunlight turns the water an otherworldly turquoise. Entry around £8 to £10 per person, kids love it.
Drogarati Cave – close to Melissani and easily combined into the same day out, this vast cave system is believed to be around 150 million years old. The stalactites and stalagmites are genuinely spectacular, and the acoustics are so remarkable that concerts are occasionally held inside it. Entry around £5.
Myrtos Beach day trip – pack a picnic (facilities are minimal), load the car and make the 20-minute drive west to Myrtos. One of the most beautiful beaches in Europe and a genuine family memory-maker. Go early.
Aquatic Dive Club – the longest-established diving centre on Kefalonia, based right in Agia Efimia since 1997. They offer discover scuba experiences for complete beginners, including children, in a gentle and safe environment. The underwater world here, ancient amphoras, reef fish, the occasional octopus, is extraordinary even for a first dive.
💑 Things to do for couples
Agia Efimia is, at its core, a couples' destination. The harbour, the views, the unhurried pace, the candlelit fish tavernas. Here's how to make the most of it.
Harbourfront dinner – pick a table right on the waterfront and order whatever the kitchen recommends that day. Fresh seafood, local Kefalonian wine, views of the bay and the lights of Ithaca across the water. Gialos Café Bar is a popular spot for drinks; the fish tavernas along the front handle dinner.
Day boat hire, just the two of you – the small motorboats from Yellow Boats or Boulevard don't require a licence, come with a cooler box and a briefing, and give you the entire northern Kefalonian coastline to explore at your own pace. Find your own cove, drop anchor, swim, repeat.
Ferry to Ithaca – day trips run from Agia Efimia to the mythical island of Odysseus. Sparkling emerald waters, hidden unspoiled beaches and tiny traditional villages that feel like stepping back thirty years. The 'Romantika' daily cruise departs from the harbour each morning and includes coastal beaches and an Ithaca visit.
Sunset drinks at Kefalonia Bay Palace – even if you're not staying there, the hotel terrace has views over the bay that guests describe as genuinely goosebump-inducing. Worth calling ahead to ask about access.
Scuba diving together – the Aquatic Dive Club caters brilliantly for non-divers who want to try it for the first time. The underwater visibility here can reach 50 metres, and the chance of seeing ancient amphoras on the seabed is a genuine one. A completely different kind of shared experience.
🎉 Things to do for groups
Agia Efimia suits groups who want a shared adventure rather than a shared bar crawl. The activities here are genuinely social and memorable.
Three-island cruise – day cruises departing from Agia Efimia visit multiple beaches, coastal landmarks and nearby islands. Swimming stops, snorkelling, dolphins as a real possibility. Around £35 to £45 per person, bookable at the port. A brilliant group day.
Catamaran sailing tour – luxury catamaran day trips departing from Agia Efimia visit Kefalonian villages, Ithaca, Lefkas and Meganisi. A more upmarket way to see the Ionian, and a natural fit for groups who want something beyond the standard excursion.
Scuba diving packages – the Aquatic Dive Club offers multi-dive packages for experienced divers and first-timers alike. A shared dive experience, followed by a long harbour lunch, is a genuinely memorable group day.
Jeep safari or donkey trekking – Wild Nature Expeditions runs jeep safaris through the Kefalonian countryside from the area, while Donkey Trekking Kefalonia offers guided treks through the hills with spectacular views over the Bay of Sami. Considerably more fun than it sounds, and a proper group laugh.
Cooking and tasting evenings – several operators in the area run outdoor dining experiences bringing traditional Kefalonian flavours together in a sea-side setting. Fresh seafood, kreatopita (meat pie), local wine and good company. Bookable through the village travel agents.
🗣️ Local Lingo

Stin iyia mas (Στην υγειά μας) – Cheers
Poso kani? (Πόσο κάνει;) – How much is it?
Poly oreo (Πολύ ωραίο) – Very beautiful (you'll be saying this constantly)
