Kalami, the gem of the northeast coastline. This delightful bay is an absolute slay, delivering a perfect blend of crystalline turquoise water, pebble beaches, and the famously relaxed atmosphere of this part of the island.
Highlights of your Holidays to Kalami
The water – Kalami's bay faces east (so great for a morning swim), it's sheltered by green headlands on both sides, and the water is the kind of clear where you can count the pebbles on the seabed from a standing start. Snorkelling here feels like swimming through a screensaver.
The olive groves – Kalami sits in a valley of ancient olive trees that run from the hillside right down to the water's edge. The light through the branches in the late afternoon is the reason painters come here (and the reason your phone gallery will be embarrassingly full by day three).
The White House – No not the one with the new ballroom! The elegant former home of author Lawrence Durrell sits right on the waterfront, now a taverna downstairs and holiday apartments upstairs. You can eat grilled fish in the same room where he wrote one of the greatest books about Greece, which is either deeply inspiring or deeply intimidating (depending on how you're finding drafting your WhatsApp message to the folks back home).
Boat hire – Rent a small motorboat (no licence needed under 30hp) and explore the northeast coast at your own pace. Cove after cove after cove, each one quieter than the last, with nobody to answer to except the fuel gauge.
Agni Bay – One headland south and you're in Agni, a tiny bay with three waterfront tavernas and absolutely nothing else. Arrive by boat, have a long lunch, swim, leave. The perfect afternoon.
Good to Know
☀️ Weather – Summers hit 28-32°C with clear skies and warm sea (23-25°C from June to September). The bay is sheltered, so swimming conditions are usually calm.
💶 Money – A waterfront lunch runs €12-€18, a beer is €3-€4, a coffee is €2.
📖 Fun Fact – Lawrence Durrell called Kalami "the most beautiful bay in the world" and lived here with his wife Nancy from 1935 to 1939. His brother Gerald (the animal-mad one from My Family and Other Animals) was down the coast in Corfu Town. Between them, they put Corfu on the literary map so thoroughly that the ITV series The Durrells brought it all back 80 years later.
Beaches
Kalami's coastline is white pebble rather than sand, which is what makes the water so ridiculously clear. Water shoes recommended.
Kalami beach – A long crescent of smooth white pebbles curving around the bay, with the White House at one end and olive groves at the other. Calm, clear water with a gentle slope. Sun loungers for hire, or bring your own towel and pick a spot.
Agni Bay – One headland south (10 minutes by boat, 20 minutes on foot via the coastal path). Three waterfront tavernas, white pebbles, and water so clear you'll wonder if someone cleaned it.
Kerasia Beach – Two bays south, reachable by boat or a longer coastal walk. A wider pebbly beach backed by cypress trees, with a single taverna. Properly peaceful.
Kouloura – A tiny horseshoe harbour north of Kalami with a single taverna on the quay. More of a swimming spot than a beach, but the setting is absurdly pretty (it looks like a painting someone made up).
Local Lingo
Greek is the main language but English is widely spoken in Kalami's tavernas and hotels so although you'll get by without them, a few Greek phrases will always charm the locals.
Yia sou, yah-SOO, Hello / Cheers
Efharisto, ef-hah-ree-STOH, Thank you
Parakalo, pah-rah-kah-LOH, Please / You're welcome
Ton logariasmo, ton lo-gah-ree-az-MOH, The bill
Yamas, YAH-mahs, Cheers (for the ouzo)
Kalimera, kah-lee-MEH-rah, Good morning
Where to Stay
Kamali is a small resort so there are only a limited number of hotels in the town itself. The best nearby bases are Kassiopi (a fishing village turned boutique resort, 15 minutes north) and Corfu Town (the UNESCO-listed capital).
💑 Couples
Kalami itself is the romantic pick. Small, quiet, literary, and the waterfront tavernas do candlelit dinners with your feet practically in the Ionian.
👨👩👧👦 Families
Kassiopi has the best family infrastructure nearby: pebbly beaches, tavernas, boat trips and a medieval castle for kids to explore. Sidari on the north coast has sandy beaches and the Canal d'Amour rock formations.
🎉 Groups
Kassiopi has late bars and cocktail spots. For a proper night out, Corfu Town is the place, or Kavos at the south end if the group wants full-send nightlife.
🏨 What are the best hotels in Kalami?
Kalami is only a small resort so the only hotel we recommend in the resort itself is...
San Antonio Corfu Resort. Set in olive groves on the hillside above Kalami Bay with views over the Ionian to the Albanian mountains. Pool, spa, watersports (water-skiing, banana boats, kayaking), and a restaurant with that view. The pebble beach is steps away. Our top pick for Kalami.
If you want more hotel choice, you might want to stay in nearby Kassiopi, or Corfu Town itself.
Travel Guide
👨👩👧👦 Families
Boat hire around the coves – Rent a small motorboat and let the kids be captain (sort of). No licence needed under 30hp. Chug between Kalami, Agni, Kerasia and the smaller coves, stopping to swim wherever the water looks good.
Kassiopi castle – A 13th-century ruin on the headland with views to Albania. Free to explore, and the crumbling walls and overgrown paths are exactly the kind of thing children love (and adults pretend not to).
Snorkelling at Kalami beach – The water clarity here is genuinely exceptional. Even small children can see fish from the shallows. Bring masks or hire them from the beach.
💑 Couples
Dinner at the White House taverna – Eat grilled fish and drink local wine on the terrace where Lawrence Durrell wrote Prospero's Cell. Book ahead in summer.
Coastal walk to Agni – A 20-minute path over the headland to Agni Bay's three waterfront tavernas. Have a long lunch, swim, walk back. The kind of afternoon that's hard to improve on.
Sunset boat trip – Hire a boat in the late afternoon and motor north along the coast. The light on the cliffs and olive groves is the reason this stretch of Corfu became famous.
🎉 Groups
Beach day and boat hire – Split into boats and explore the coves, regroup at Kalami beach for drinks. The bay is small enough that nobody gets properly lost.
Taverna crawl – Kalami has a handful of waterfront restaurants, Agni has three more. Walk or boat between them, comparing grilled octopus and house wine as you go (someone will definitely start a spreadsheet).
Day trip to Corfu Town – The UNESCO-listed old town has Venetian architecture, the Liston arcade, cricket on the Spianada (yes, really), and proper nightlife.

Corfu Town – The UNESCO-listed capital with Venetian lanes, the Old Fortress, the Liston arcade and the best restaurant scene on the island.

Kalami sits on Corfu's sheltered northeast coast, facing the Albanian mountains across the strait. The bay's east-facing orientation means morning sun on the beach and shade from the hillside by late afternoon, which suits the rhythm perfectly: beach in the morning, taverna lunch in the shade, back to the water when it cools.
Summers (June to August) are hot and dry (28-32°C) with long sunny days and warm sea temperatures (23-25°C).
Spring (April to June) is warm, green and quieter.
September and October are still swimmable and less crowded. Winters are mild and wet, and most tourist facilities close from November to April.
