The quintessentially English King's Head Pub, on Khalid Walid Street, open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, is a must for some traditional pool, beer and football, and is fast becoming the venue of choice for itinerant Brits. Luxor is one of the world's most fascinating places chiefly because of it's panoply of millennia-old man-made structures, and the best way to view it is on a boat ride across the world's longest river, the Nile. From here you can take tea and watch exotic fauna on the teeming waters, while sandy streets and sphinxes segue into golden desert for miles around. Donkey rides are also excellent for afternoon panoramas of the tombs at the Necropolis on the west bank, or hike up the rocky precipices to drink in the beauty of this eternal city and it's surrounding cliffs at sunset.

Luxor was brought to the world's attention by the discovery of Tutankhamun's tomb in 1922, but this is just the tip of the sand dune - it's built on the ancient city of Thebes, the glittering capital of the New Kingdom, and onetime storehouse for the riches of Egypt. Following the slow decline of Egypt as an ancient superpower, Thebes found a niche as the world's oldest tourist resort, frequented by affluent Greeks and Romans over 2000 years ago!

Latterly, Luxor remained in centuries of slumber until the rise of Egyptology brought in that irrepressible invader, the modern tourist.
