Climate Overview

Bosnia and Herzegovina’s weather has a real split personality: mild, rainy winters give way to seriously warm, sun-packed summers. Temperatures climb steadily from spring into summer, so you’re never far from T-shirt weather. Rain is a regular guest in the cooler months, but the payoff is a landscape that stays green and full of life.

If you’re headed to the Adriatic coast near Neum - the country’s only sliver of seaside - you’ll find a climate that’s a touch softer and breezier than inland. The mountains and rivers inland have their own charm but pack a cooler punch compared to the balmier coastline.

Seasons Overview

Spring (March - May): Spring in Bosnia and Herzegovina starts out on the cooler side but quickly warms up, with air temperatures rising from 14°C in March to a comfortable 23°C by May. Rain eases off as the season rolls on, and you’ll get longer days with up to 9 hours of sunshine in May - perfect for early holibobs.

Summer (June - August): Summer pulls out all the stops. Expect highs around 28-31°C and sea temperatures that reach a very inviting 25°C in August. Rainfall drops to just 35mm in July and August, so blue skies are standard. Sunlight hours peak at a whopping 12 a day - don’t forget your shades.

Autumn (September - November): Autumn cools things down gently, starting at 26°C in September and dropping to 14°C by November. The sea stays swim-friendly through September, but rain makes a comeback, especially in October and November. Still, you’ll get plenty of decent, sunny days before winter sets in.

Winter (December - February): Winter in Bosnia and Herzegovina is mild but wet, with temperatures between 9-10°C and rainfall peaking at 160mm in November and December. Sunshine is limited, so you’ll want to pack a layer or two and maybe a good book for those cosy, shorter days.

Best Time To Visit

For a proper beach holiday, aim for June through September. Air temperatures are reliably warm, between 26°C and 31°C, and the sea sits comfortably at 21-25°C - definitely swim-ready. Rainfall is at its lowest in these months, and you’ll have up to 12 hours of sunshine a day, so you can make the most of every minute. If you prefer things a little quieter but still want warm weather, late May or early September are solid bets. Just remember: outside the short coastal strip near Neum, the rest of Bosnia and Herzegovina is more about rivers and lakes than sandy beaches.
