The best beaches to visit in Golem

Golem's beaches are wide, sandy and built for proper beach holidays. Here are our faves in the area:

• Golem Beach – the main event. A long sandy Adriatic shoreline lined with well-organised beach clubs, sunloungers and parasols, water sports operators and cold drinks on demand. The water warms up beautifully by July and is calm and family-friendly in the mornings. A proper, no-nonsense beach holiday.

• Fafa Beach – at the southern end of the Golem strip, this is where the big resort hotels cluster and the beach gets a touch quieter. A great base if you want beach clubs and facilities but a slightly more relaxed pace than the main drag.

• Qerret Beach – a short drive north of Golem, this is a quieter, less developed stretch with a more local feel. Good for those who want to escape the sunlounger queues without going far.

• Lalzi Bay (Gjiri i Lalëzit) – a wide, long and wonderfully peaceful bay north of Durres with calm shallow water and plenty of space. Popular with Albanian families and brilliant for a quieter, more laid-back beach day.

• Cape Rodon beaches – about 40 minutes north, the wild and undeveloped Cape of Rodon has hidden pebble coves with some of the clearest water on the Adriatic coast. No beach clubs, no crowds — just dramatic Albanian coastline and a crumbling medieval castle on the headland. Worth every minute of the drive.

• Spille Beach – a long, free beach backed by pine forest just north of Golem. No loud music, no beach clubs, just sand and sea and the smell of pine trees. A brilliant hidden gem for a peaceful afternoon.

Golem is a linear resort town - most hotels sit along the beach strip, so the main choice is about which bit of the coast you base yourself on:

Family holidays

The central Golem strip has everything you need on your doorstep. Private beach hotels, kids' clubs, splash zones and a promenade full of cafes and ice cream spots. Fafa, slightly further south, is even more resort-focused and a touch less busy in peak season.

Groups

Stay in the thicker of the central strip. Golem's promenade comes alive in the evenings with bars, live music and late-night spots. The beach clubs earlier in the day are brilliant for groups who want to set up, order rounds and not move for eight hours.

Couples

A spa hotel with a private beach and Adriatic-view balcony is Golem's best couples offering. Pair it with an evening promenade stroll, fresh seafood by the water and a day trip up to the Roman amphitheatre in Durres, and you've got a genuinely lovely break.

🤩 Fun fact: According to local legend, Julius Caesar and Pompey fought a major battle near Golem during the Roman Civil War in 48 BC. Millennia later, the main drama is deciding which beach club to choose. Progress.

🏖️ Best beach: Golem Beach itself - long, sandy, warm water and great facilities. If you want something wilder and more dramatic, Cape Rodon is worth the 40-minute drive for a completely different experience.

💶 Money Talk(s): Golem is one of the better-value beach resorts in the Mediterranean. A sunlounger and umbrella for the day runs about £3-5, a cold beer at a beach club is £1.50-2, and a full fresh seafood dinner for two on the promenade comes in at around £20-30.

Things to do for Families

• Golem Beach days – the main beach is wide, sandy and warm, with calm morning water that's perfect for young swimmers. Sunlounger rentals are cheap, vendors wander the beach all day and there's always something going on. Easy, brilliant, and right outside the hotel door.

• Aqua Mania Waterpark – one of the most popular family attractions in the Golem area, with slides, pools and splash zones for all ages. A brilliant half-day out when the kids need a change from the beach.

• Durres Roman Amphitheatre – just 20 minutes up the road, the largest Roman amphitheatre in the Balkans once seated 20,000 spectators. Kids love the scale of it and the gladiator stories that come with it. A proper historical adventure from your beach base.

• Promenade evenings – Golem's seafront promenade is perfect for family evenings. Ice cream, cafes, a stroll along the sea — the Albanian xhiro tradition of an evening walk is something to genuinely enjoy, not just observe.

• Durres Roman Amphitheatre and city tour – a group morning in Durres mixing the Roman amphitheatre, the Venetian Tower, the Archaeological Museum and lunch on the promenade. A brilliant change of pace from beach days.

• Karting at Arena Karting Albania – a popular group activity near Golem for when you want something competitive with a bit of a buzz. Great fun and genuinely affordable by any European standard.

• Day trip to Tirana – Albania's capital is under an hour away. Hit the Blloku neighbourhood for cocktails, visit the Pyramid and the House of Leaves spy museum and be back in Golem for a sunset beach club session. A brilliant group day.

Things to do on cheap Golem holidays

• The beach (basically free) – Golem's main beach is public, and sunlounger hire runs a few euros for the day. Long, sandy, warm and wonderful. The single cheapest and best thing to do in the whole resort.

• Promenade strolling (totally free) – the evening promenade is one of the great free pleasures in Albania. Walk, sit, eat an ice cream, watch the Adriatic turn pink. Nothing to pay.

• Street food and fresh produce – local vendors walk the beach and promenade selling fresh fruit, corn on the cob and local snacks for next to nothing. Better than any hotel snack bar, a fraction of the price.

• Durres Roman Amphitheatre for pennies – the Balkans' most impressive Roman ruin is 20 minutes away and costs a tiny entry fee. Proper ancient history for almost nothing.

• Spille Beach for free – drive or take a bus a short way north to this long pine-backed beach with no entry fee, no beach clubs and no noise. Just Adriatic sand and sea. Free, brilliant and completely underrated.
