💶 Money Talk(s): Durres is excellent value, especially compared to the more touristy spots further south. A beer on the promenade runs about £1.50-2, a pizza (Italian food rules here) is around £4-6, and a full fresh seafood dinner for two comes in at around £20-25.

The best beaches to visit in Durres

Durres has the biggest beach in Albania, and a handful of quieter spots nearby for when you want to escape the buzz. Here are our faves:

• Durres Beach (Plazhi i Durrësit) – over 10km of sandy Adriatic shoreline, right in the heart of the city. It's the most popular beach in the whole country, with sunloungers, vendors, watersports and a brilliant buzzy atmosphere. Not the prettiest in Albania, but the energy is unmatched.

• Currila Beach – just north of the port, this stretch is noticeably quieter than the main city beach. A great shout if you want a more relaxed day by the Adriatic without travelling far.

• Golem Beach – a little south of the city, this is where the big resort hotels sit. Wider, sandier and a touch more laid-back than central Durres. Great if you're after a proper beach resort feel.

• Lalzi Bay (Gjiri i Lalëzit) – a wide, long and wonderfully relaxed bay a few kilometres north of Durres. Popular with families for its calm waters, more spacious sands and chilled atmosphere well away from the city crowds.

• Cape Rodon beaches – about an hour north, the Cape of Rodon is a wild, largely undeveloped nature reserve with hidden sandy coves, a 15th-century castle ruin and scenery that feels completely untouched. Worth the drive.

• Spille Beach – a long, free beach backed by pine forest, just south of Durres. Far quieter than the city beach, no loud music, no beach clubs, just sand, sea and pine trees. A proper hidden gem.

Family holidays

The resort area along the main beach is ideal. Everything is walkable, the hotels have pools and kids' clubs, and the beach is right outside the door. Golem, just south of the city, is even more resort-focused if you want the full all-in package.

Groups

Couples

Things to do for Families

• Durres Beach – over 10km of sandy Adriatic beach right in the city. Sunloungers, splash zones, vendors selling snacks and watersports galore. The kids will be entertained from arrival to sunset without anyone having to try very hard.

• Roman Amphitheatre – the largest Roman ruin in the Balkans, sitting right in the middle of the city. Built in the 2nd century AD and once home to 20,000 roaring spectators. Kids love the sheer scale and the gladiator stories that come with it.

• Lalzi Bay day trip – a short drive north for a wide, calm, family-friendly beach well away from the city crowds. Shallow water, plenty of space and a genuinely relaxed atmosphere.

• Promenade evenings – Durres's seafront promenade is brilliant for families in the evening. Ice cream, sea views and the classic Albanian xhiro (evening stroll) with half the city out socialising. Completely free and genuinely lovely.

• Albanian wine country day trip – the vineyards around Durres are some of the best in Albania, and several (including the brilliant Kantina Duka Winery) offer family-friendly tours and tastings. A great half-day out from the beach.

Things to do for Couples

• Roman Amphitheatre at golden hour – wander the ancient stones of the Balkans' largest Roman ruin as the light turns golden. It's free to walk around outside the gates and completely magical at dusk.

• Sunset on the promenade – Durres's waterfront café terrace at the southern end of the Bulevardi Epidamn is one of Albania's great sunset spots. Grab a table, order an Aperol and watch the Adriatic turn orange.

• Venetian Tower – a 15th-century circular stone tower in the heart of the old city, now with an interactive visitor centre. Romantic in a slightly crumbling, history-steeped way. Climb to the top for views over the city and sea.

• Cape Rodon day trip – drive an hour north to this wild, undeveloped nature reserve with Skanderbeg's castle, hidden sandy coves and scenery that feels like the Albanian coast at its most untouched. Brilliant for a private picnic beach day.

• Dinner in the old city – find a terrace restaurant in the historic centre, order fresh grilled fish and local wine, and settle in for the kind of long, lazy dinner that only happens on holiday. Durres does this beautifully.

Things to do for Groups

• Beach volleyball and jet skiing – Durres's main beach has watersports operators running all day in summer. Get competitive on the sand or race each other on the water, both equally brilliant as group activities.

• Durres nightlife – beach bars, seafront clubs and a lively bar strip make Durres one of Albania's best cities for a group night out. It's busiest in July and August when Albanian diaspora return from across Europe. Absolute scenes.

• Albanian winery tour – book a group tasting at Kantina Duka or Abaia Winery (the one built inside a communist-era bunker — only in Albania). Local grape varieties, generous pours and a genuinely memorable afternoon.

• Day trip to Tirana – Albania's capital is just 40 minutes away. Hit the Blloku neighbourhood for cocktails and street art, visit the Pyramid and the House of Leaves spy museum, then head back to the beach for the evening. A brilliant group day.

• Archaeological Museum – the largest museum in Albania, packed with Illyrian, Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine artefacts. A great group morning before hitting the beach in the afternoon.
