• Ksamil Beach – the one that started it all. Crystal-clear turquoise water, tiny islands you can swim or kayak out to, and a buzzy beach-club scene. Albania's most Instagrammed stretch of coast, and for very good reason.

• Dhërmi Beach – long, dramatic and backed by olive-tree-covered mountains, this is one of the most famous beaches on the Riviera. Lively in summer with bars and restaurants right on the pebbles, but long enough to find your own quiet corner even in August.

• Gjipe Beach – for the explorers. You can only reach this one on foot through a gorge canyon or by boat from the sea, and it ranks among Europe's most beautiful hidden beaches. Totally worth the trek.

• Ksamil Islands – tiny uninhabited islets just offshore from Ksamil that you can paddle out to by kayak or pedalo. Pack a snorkel and you're sorted.

• Palasa Beach – the first beach you hit after descending the incredible Llogara Pass. A gorgeous stretch of white pebbles and clear water with a handful of low-key local eateries. Blissfully uncrowded.

• Jale Beach – a secluded bay that's fast becoming the Riviera's most fashionable spot, with some of the most stunning beach bars on the coast. Great for those who want their beach day with a side of luxe.

• Drymades Beach – just a short hop from Dhërmi, this golden-pebbled beauty is a hotspot for music festivals and lively beach bars. The kind of place where a "quick dip" turns into a full afternoon.

• Borsh Beach – Albania's longest beach at a whopping 7km of pure white pebbles lapped by the Ionian Sea, with a pretty hilltop village behind it. Come for the scale, stay for the serenity.

• Himara Beach – a wide sandy bay backed by a whitestone promenade and pine trees, with calm shallow water that makes it brilliant for families. Warm sea temperatures nearly year-round, too.

The Riviera stretches for over 150km of coastline, so picking your base matters. Here's the lowdown:

Family holidays

Himara and Ksamil are the top picks for families. Himara has calm, shallow water and a sandy bay, while Ksamil has that wow-factor turquoise sea the kids will absolutely lose their minds over. Both are relaxed, safe and genuinely lovely.

Groups

Dhërmi and Jale are where it's at for groups. Dhërmi hosts big-name music festivals like Kala in June, while Jale has the glitziest beach bars on the coast. Pack your dancing shoes and your factor 50.

Couples

Sarande is the Riviera's unofficial capital and ideal for couples who want everything at their fingertips: waterfront dining, ferry trips over to Corfu, and easy access to Butrint (a UNESCO-listed ancient city that's wildly romantic at sunset). Ksamil is just down the road for beach days.

🤩 Fun fact: Albania has more bunkers per square kilometre than any country on Earth — over 170,000 built during the communist era. You'll spot them everywhere on the drive down the coast. Some are now bars. Only in Albania.

Things to do for Families

• Ksamil beach-hopping – the little islands just offshore from Ksamil are reachable by kayak or pedalo, and snorkelling in the crystal-clear shallows is absolutely brilliant for kids. Shallow, calm and warm, it's basically a giant natural swimming pool.

• Butrint National Park – a UNESCO World Heritage Site just 20 minutes from Ksamil, packed with Roman, Byzantine and Venetian ruins in a lush, shaded setting. Kids love the sheer scale of it, and there's loads of space to explore.

• Himara beach days – calm, shallow water and a sandy bay makes Himara the most family-friendly beach on the coast. The promenade is lined with cafes and ice cream spots, and warm sea temperatures mean the little ones can paddle practically year-round.

• Narta Lagoon – just outside Vlore, this technicolour-blue lagoon is calm, warm and perfect for young families who want something a bit quieter than the main beaches. Beautiful and brilliantly photogenic.

• Albanian breakfast culture – Albanians take breakfast very seriously, and so should you. Think fresh bread, local cheese, olives, honey, eggs and tomatoes, a spread that'll fuel the whole family for a full day of adventures.

Things to do for Couples

• Boat trip to Gjipe Beach – only reachable by sea or a canyon hike, this secluded cove is one of the most romantic spots on the entire Riviera. Pack a picnic, hire a boat from Dhërmi and have the place practically to yourselves.

• Sunset dinner in Sarande – the waterfront promenade in Sarande is made for long, lingering dinners. Fresh seafood, local wine and an Ionian sunset, it doesn't get much more romantic than that.

• Drive the SH8 coastal highway – considered one of the most scenic drives in the Balkans, this stretch of road winds through mountain passes and opens up to jaw-dropping sea views around every bend. Pull over as much as you like — every viewpoint is worth it.

• Karaburun Peninsula speedboat tour – cruise around secret caves, hidden beaches and military ruins that can only be reached by water. The Haxhi Ali Cave is a proper bucket-list moment. Boats depart from Vlore.

• Raki tasting at a local taverna – Albania's national spirit is made by almost every family on the Riviera. Ask your waiter for a house pour, pull up a chair, and let the evening take care of itself.

Things to do for Groups

• Dhërmi beach club scene – beach clubs line the Dhërmi and Drymades stretch, and in summer it's one of the liveliest spots on the Riviera. The Kala Festival in June draws big international DJs and thousands of revellers — absolute scenes.

• Sarande promenade nights – by night, Sarande's seafront comes alive with families, groups and travellers all spilling out of bars and restaurants. Relaxed, sociable and brilliant for a group who wants energy without a full-on club night.

• Karaburun speedboat adventure – secret caves, snorkelling stops and hidden beaches accessible only by water. Book a group tour from Vlore and make a full day of it, cold beers on deck are basically mandatory.

• Llogara Pass road trip – the dramatic mountain drive from Vlore down to the Riviera is a group road trip essential. Stop at the summit for views across the entire Ionian coast. Absolutely jaw-dropping on a clear day.

Sarande – the unofficial capital of the Riviera, with a buzzy waterfront promenade, great restaurants and ferry links to Corfu. The best base for exploring Butrint, Ksamil and the southern coast.
